San Jose State University Art Musuem
San Jose, CA
The project for the new Museum for the San Jose State University Art Museum is a design competition proposal that seeks to radically re-imagine the role of a museum on the site of an active fine arts school. Rather than demolish the existing academic building and relocate the fine arts program, the proposal creates a hybrid program and structure that overlay the museum onto the existing facility, and discovers synergistic opportunities between the old and new. The existing building is ‘shrink-wrapped’ in a new structure of steel and lenticular glazing and metal mesh that encases a newly imagined system of circulation and exhibit space, while the existing courtyard is transformed into a central atrium featuring galleries and performance space.
