LACCD Southwest College Visual & Performing Arts Center

Los Angeles, CA

This project was an invited design competition for a new Visual and Performing Arts Center for the Los Angeles Community College at Southwest College.  It was designed to the highest standards of sustainable design, with an intended LEED Platinum rating.  A significant challenge was the location of two diagonal earthquake faults across the site, which led to the unique design solution of lifting the main portion of the building onto a base that conforms to the fault lines.

Programmatically, the project includes a Black Box Theater, Recital Hall, spaces for the Music, Arts, and Film Departments, a Student Success Center, General Classrooms, and Administrative spaces.  The design features a large public plaza at the entry for outdoor performances, with a large operable door to the Black Box.
